3 Simple Ways To Make Your Life Better in 2011 (Part 2)

December 31, 2010

Do you want a better life in 2011? Sure, we all do! But how can we actually make it happen? This is part two of a three part series on three ways to make 2011 better. The first way is to Address Your Weaknesses. Here’s the second way:

DEFINE YOUR GOALS

Have you ever accidentally accomplished anything? Accidentally stumbled into success? Probably not.

Accomplishing anything is usually the result of having a clear goal in mind, and sticking with it until you reach it. Nobody accidentally quits smoking, or accidentally writes a book. It takes purpose.

Here are the 3 things you need to do if you’re going to really reach a goal this year:

  • STEP 1: IDENTIFY YOUR GOALS

So what do want to accomplish in 2011? What are your goals? If you don’t have any, you’ll never reach them!

Get out a piece of paper, and write down what you feel God wants you to accomplish this year. (I would highly recommend that you spend some time in prayer first!) Make a list of at least two or three goals that you want to reach. If you have several, you may want to break them down by categories such as financial, spiritual, physical, etc.

As an example, let’s pretend our goal is to lose weight.

  • STEP 2: BE SPECIFIC

This is really, really important. You have to be able to measure your goals. We can’t just say “My goal is to lose weight.” If we’re one ounce lighter at the end of the year, did we reach our goal? Kinda? Not really?

Instead, we need to be specific and say “My goal is to lose 20lbs by January 1st, 2012.” That is well-defined enough that you can measure it. When you have lost 10lbs, you will know you’re halfway to your goal!

  • STEP 3: HAVE A PLAN

Look at the goals you wrote down. (You did write them down, right?) What steps do you need to take to accomplish those things? What do you need to stop doing that’s preventing you from reaching these goals? What do you need to start doing that will help you get there?

Identify practical, specific actions you can take. In our example, we could decide to:

      1. Start exercising 45 minutes every Tues, Thurs, & Sat morning
      2. Stop eating dessert
