How To Be Happier In 5 Minutes

February 24, 2011

Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. – Psalm 40:5

I believe our attitude is a direct result of our thoughts. A happy person is one who is thinking happy thoughts. Want to be depressed? Think depressing thoughts.

Here’s an example that proves it: I decided to make a list of the things I was thankful for. I began writing them down. When I finally gave up (because there were too many to count), I was happier than when I began. Notice: Nothing in my life changed. Except the thoughts I was thinking. By focusing my thoughts on good things, I immediately began feeling happier.

But don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself! I challenge you: write down 25 things you’re thankful for. Don’t overthink it. Just randomly write them down as they come to you. You’ll be amazed what it does for you!

Here’s my list of things I have to be grateful for (in no particular order):

1. That God has forgiven my sin
2. My Bible
3. The ability to hear laughter
4. The ability to laugh
5. The great pleasure of waking up without the worry of trying to find my next meal
6. A beautiful house
7. An even more beautiful home
8. My amazing family
9. Money in the bank
