Ugly Sweaters and Bad Attitudes

July 29, 2011

You can’t choose the weather.
You can’t always choose your financial situation.

Is your attitude this ugly?

You can’t always choose how people act or respond.
You can’t choose the family you’re born into.
You can’t always choose what happens to you.

But there’s one thing YOU are always responsible for. There’s one thing you CAN choose…

Your attitude.

Your attitude is not an accident. It is as much a choice as the clothes you are wearing right now.

And don’t you cop out and tell me “a discouraged attitude runs in my family,” or “I come by this fiery temper naturally.” You can’t keep your grandma from giving you an ugly sweater for Christmas; but you can keep from wearing it to the job interview the following week.

See, just because you’re handed something, doesn’t mean you have to wear it. That applies to sweaters…and attitudes.

We often think of a poor attitude as a reaction (example: our car broke down, so we’re in a bad mood). But that’s simply an excuse. Because a poor attitude isn’t a reaction – it’s a choice. I am choosing to wear that ugly-sweater attitude.

So take a look in the mirror. What attitude are you wearing?
