What Do You Want?

February 10, 2011

I spend a lot of time thinking about concepts like success and life goals. I write about them, teach about them, and discuss them all the time.

I am constantly amazed that the majority of people do not know what they want in life. Seriously. If you ask them, they laugh and reply, “A million dollars.” They don’t know what they truly want out of life. They know who they are. They know what they do. But they don’t know what they want.

I have encountered the sad irony that we can go through life and never accomplish anything. We can have eighty years of eating and sleeping and working and playing, and never truly understand the purpose of life. Our days can become a blur of kids, meals, schedules, events… and without realizing it, we are duped into merely existing instead of living. Our schedules and responsibilities dictate our lives, when shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Most people are so overwhelmed by their chaotic lives that all they want is to survive another day. They just want to keep the bills paid, keep the boss happy, keep the kids in line, and retain their sanity for another twenty-four hours. It’s the ‘keep my head above the water’ approach to life; not necessarily by choice, but because of the simple truth that if you don’t run your life, your life will run you.

How about you? Do you know what you want in life? Do you have a dream? A goal that drives your life, dictates your priorities, and brings a smile to your face? Or have you been sucked into the trap of merely existing– just living another day.

I challenge you to find out what you want in life. God has ingrained a calling and mission in your heart. Stay focused. Live on purpose. Be determined.

You will never achieve success until you know how to define it. What is your definition of success? What do you want in life?
