Stop Faking Interest

We all know that listening is an important skill and one we could all do better at. So you’ve probably heard advice like, “Make eye contact, nod your head, repeat what you just heard, smile,” etc.

I would like you to take all that advice, pack it neatly in a box, and… set it on fire.

Why? Because it’s well-intentioned advice, but it misses the point. And the point is this:

There’s no reason to try to show you’re paying attention if you are, in fact, paying attention.

    • So instead of trying harder to come across as attentive… work harder at actually being attentive.
    • Instead of trying to convince people you’re listening… work harder at actually listening.
    • Instead of trying to come across like you care… work harder at actually caring.

Your conversations will drastically improve. And you’ll naturally become a better listener, instead of a better actor.
